A geothermal heating and cooling system was installed in an existing 100 year old home and a new extension at Crookwell in 2013.
The heat was delivered via wall radiator panels in the old part of the building and air ducted underfloor in the new section. The ground source heat pump was a WaterFurnace Synergy (combination) unit, which is able to deliver both air and water from the one machine.
A horizontal ground loop system was installed in the backyard to suit the Synergy’s capacity.
Wall radiators were used in the old part of the house as ductwork for air delivery could not be installed under the floor due to 900 mm wide hand laid footings, while the ceilings had pressed metal linings.
The estimated energy saving per year for this client is more than 50% compared to alternative options – LPG (bottled gas) or reverse cycle air conditioning.
LPG (heat only) $1722
LPG (heat & cool) $1316
Geothermal (heat & cool) $738 (24 cents per kw/hr for electricity)
